New materials for teaching reading, writing, social studies and social and emotional skills

Starting fall 2023, teachers will use new books and lessons to teach several different subjects:

• Reading, writing and speaking and listening skills–also known as English language arts–in kindergarten through eighth grade
• Social studies in fifth, sixth and eighth grades
• Navigating emotions, gaining self-awareness, meeting behavioral expectations, making good decisions and establishing healthy connections–also known as social and emotional learning–in kindergarten through eighth grade

How the materials were selected
The current curricula used to teach these subjects are outdated. Providing high-quality instruction is one of the goals that the community identified for the district as part of its strategic plan, so it was important to adopt new curricula that meet expectations for teaching and learning.

Over the past year, parents, guardians, teachers and community members had several opportunities to evaluate materials from different companies and provide input. Then, teachers tested the materials in their classes. Read about the process of selecting and piloting the English language arts, social studies and social and emotional learning materials.

Input from teachers, parents, guardians and community members was used to narrow the options and make a recommendation to the school board. The school board voted recently to approve the following:

• English language arts: Wit & Wisdom with Fundations for kindergarten through fifth grade and CommonLit 360 for sixth through eighth grades. Learn about the new curricula by watching a recorded webinar.
• Social studies: Savvas for fifth grade and TCI for sixth and eighth grades (seventh graders learn about Washington state history)
• Social and emotional learning: Character Strong for kindergarten through eighth grade

You can still view the new materials online. Teachers will receive training on the new materials this summer, and begin using them when school starts next fall.

Battle Ground Public Schools is grateful to everyone who participated in the process, asked questions and gave their input. The new curricula will help both teacher and students engage in teaching and learning, and prepare students for high school and beyond.

Nuevos materiales para la enseñanza de la lectura, la escritura, los estudios sociales y las habilidades sociales y emocionales

A partir del otoño de 2023, los maestros estarán usando nuevos libros y lecciones para la enseñanza de varias materias diferentes:

• Lectura, escritura, del habla y comprensión auditiva, también conocidas como artes del lenguaje en inglés, comenzando con los niños de kindergarten hasta el octavo
• Los estudios sociales en el quinto, sexto y octavo grados
• Navegar las emociones, adquiriendo conciencia de sí mismos, cumplir con las expectativas de comportamiento, tomar buenas decisiones y establecer conexiones saludables, también conocidas cómo aprendizaje social y emocional, desde el kinder hasta el octavo grado

Cómo se seleccionaron los materiales
Los planes de estudios presentes que se están usando para enseñar estas materias no están actualizados. El brindar instrucción de alta calidad es una de las metas que la comunidad identificó para el distrito cómo parte de su plan estratégico, por lo que fue más importante adoptar un nuevo plan de estudios que cumpliera con las expectativas de la enseñanza y aprendizaje.
