The week of Jan. 12, 2026, was a celebration of Battle Ground Public Schools’ Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students, staff, families and community.
The celebration began with a group of TK students gaining public speaking experience during a school board meeting. At just 4 and 5 years old, they confidently shared what matters most to them—learning to persevere, mastering their ABCs and making friends. Their voices were a powerful reminder that even the youngest learners are capable of meaningful reflection and leadership. Watch their comments during the meeting.
Later in the meeting, TK teachers were recognized for their strong, data-driven collaboration. This professional learning community exceeded its objective of increasing students’ early math knowledge. Working together, they grew the percentage of students demonstrating fundamental counting skills from 50% to 87%. This growth reflects intentional instruction and teacher collaboration focused on improving outcomes for students.
The week continued with families and community members visiting schools to see student learning firsthand. Parents and guardians observed engaged learners, strong routines, joyful collaboration and purposeful play that is setting the stage for kindergarten readiness.
TK is a full day, no-cost early learning program that focuses on building young learners’ skills and supporting social and emotional development.
Kindergarten readiness increases in Battle Ground Public Schools
These TK successes are aligned with a longer-term trend of increases in kindergarten readiness. Since the 2017–18 school year, kindergarten readiness across the district has increased from 52.5% to more than 70% in 2025–26, demonstrating the lasting impact of an investment in early learning programs like Transitional Kindergarten.
