Support for Students and Families Experiencing Homelessness

Battle Ground Public Schools supports students and families who are experiencing homelessness. Under the McKinney-Vento Act, a student is considered homeless if they do not have a fixed, regular, and adequate place to sleep at night. This may include:

  • Staying in shelters, motels, cars, campgrounds, or other temporary housing

  • Living with friends or relatives because of loss of housing or financial hardship

  • Staying in places not meant for regular sleeping, such as parks or abandoned buildings

Students experiencing homelessness have the right to:

  • Enroll in school right away, even without documents like proof of address or immunizations

  • Stay in their school of origin and receive transportation if needed

  • Access free school meals, Title I academic supports, and extracurricular activities

  • Get connected to additional district and community services

Our district also has a Family and Community Resource Center (FCRC) that helps families with basic needs, referrals, and connections to local resources. Learn more here.
